Staying with the cows and chickens in San Ignacio, Belize

Even paradise gets boring after a while and we decided to leave Caye Caulker and travel further into Belize. After taking a golf cart, boat, taxi, 3-hour trip on the chicken bus with breakneck speed and finally another taxi, we arrived at Cool M Farm. The farm is just outside San Ignacio, a town in Belize, close to the border with Guatemala.

We are staying in a cabana on the farm. It is a smallholding with half a dozen of cows and about 40 chickens. Oh and the parrot that sings ‘Happy Birthday’ for hours on end. And a dog with puppies. Needless to say the kids love it. They help in the morning with collecting the eggs. They make their own yoghurts, cheeses and granola and sell them on the weekly market. The German/English family running the farm arrived here 30 years ago and never left. They loved the life here and have built this self sufficient business.

We took the local bus again and went to Belize Zoo. We had heard very good reports about it and they were correct. The Zoo was amazing with a beautiful, well-kept selection of parrots, all kinds of birds, jaguar, puma and tapirs amongst others.

We hired a car for two days and visited rock pools, another cenote and Mayan ruins. Belize was amazing and definitely gets the thumbs up.

We have now just arrived in Flores, Guatemala. We intend to stay here for a few days before moving to Antigua and take a Spanish course. We think we might stay in Antigua for a few weeks at least.
